One of the nine essential amino acids that our bodies cannot create, and therefore need to receive through food and supplements, lysine is important for anyone suffering from oral herpes simplex (HSV-1) -- those painful blisters on your lips. HSV-1 relies on a non-essential amino acid called arginine to attack our bodies. Studies show that lysine interferes with this process and makes arginine less available to the virus. It's not a cure, but it's a huge relief. I discovered this two years ago, after a lifetime of regular outbreaks. Didn't expect much (I don't believe in magic remedies), but users on Amazon were raving, and I had a gift card. ... I never regretted it. My cold sores are not miraculously gone, of course. But they are much less frequent now, and far less aggressive. Of all the brands I tried (usually with some additions, e.g. lysine plus vitamins plus whatnot), Solgar has yielded the most consistent decrease in outbreaks. Perhaps because it's a pure formulation? There is no smell or aftertaste, but the pills are large. Here is a picture next to 1 krone. They're not the easiest to swallow, but certainly not a problem. It's been so worth it.
